Over the past few decades, the United States has steadily evolved from a nation of ‘producers’ to one of ‘consumers’. The change has been celebrated by politicians and economists as proof of America’s arrival at the top of the global economic food chain. In reality, the development has depleted the nation of its hard-earned wealth, and has led us to the brink of ruin.

Nato’s ‘Taliban problem’ in Afghanistan - 31 Jul 08

General David McKiernan, commander of the Nato led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, says his biggest problem is Taliban infiltration from across the border in Pakistan.

According to Nato’s military chief, they need a more sizable fighting force to defeat the Taliban.

McKiernan took over the post two months ago, as a result he is the most senior US general in Afghanistan.

Al Jazeera’s James Bays reports on the exclusive interview.

Inside Story - Radovan Karadzic - 30 July 08

Despite being one of the world’s most wanted men, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic remains a national hero to many Serbs. Thousands turned out in Belgrade on Tuesday night to show their support for the war crimes suspect. He’s been in custody in the Serb capital since his capture last week. But as his extradition took place, those loyal to him poured onto the city’s streets to protest against the government decision to extradite him to the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.
