Paul makes sense, McCain is senseless, so guess whom the Republican “leadership” selects as the Presidential candidate? Even McCain admits he doesn’t know much about economics, has been close to lobbyists and leading Liberal Democrats, and is joined by his buddy, Lieberman, in planning a war on Iran… No fun being a registered Republican.

Bill says change needs to change

WASHINGTON, March 12 (UPI) — The U.S. Mint has been losing money because of rising prices of base metals, it was reported Wednesday.

The price of metals have risen so steeply in recent years that the mint lost $33 million producing pennies and nickels in 2006 and $99 million producing the coins in 2007.

The price of copper has risen 400 percent in the past five years, while the price of nickel and zinc tripled, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A House subcommittee has reviewed a proposal to save taxpayers $100 million a year by allowing the U.S. Treasury Department, which falls under the executive branch, to choose different metals for coins if they lose money producing them for five years in a row.

The Coin Modernization and Taxpayer Savings Act of 2008 would require the U.S. Mint to begin producing steel pennies within 180 days of the bill’s passage.

Politicians love the idea of saving money, but some decry the switch to placing money production in the executive branch of government, the report said.

Others lament the symbolism of switching metals. “How far we have fallen,” Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, said. “Now, we cannot even maintain a zinc standard.”
